A late-flowering, somewhat thorny male cultivar of German origin that produces inconspicuous yellow-white flowers in the spring. Sea buckthorn are dioecious so males and females are needed for pollination and only the females produce fruit. One male can pollinate up to 5 or 6 female plants. Sea buckthorn (like corn) are WIND pollinated so plan planting wisely to ensure best pollination based on prevailing winds.

Sea buckthorn are very hardy and are grown for the berries that the females produce. The berries are considered a superfood as they contain Vitamins A, C, E, and K, as well as Omega-7, Potassium, Calcium, Phosphorous, Zinc, Magnesium, Niacin, Boron and B vitamins. Portions of the plant are also used medicinally in Europe and Asia for various ailments. The plants have the added benefit of tolerating and improving poor soils as they fix Nitrogen. They will do better in soil that has good drainage. Plant where they can be managed as they can become invasive in some areas.
