Nannyberry, also known as wild raisins, is a hardy, native shrub that is attractive year-round. In the spring, it produces clusters of lacy, white flowers, followed by blue-black fruit in the summer, and brilliant red foliage in the fall. The berries, which can be eaten raw, should not be harvested until the entire cluster is ripe. Their taste surprisingly sweet after a couple of frosts and the flavour has been compared to date. The upright-growing shrubs are juglone tolerant and will begin producing fruit when they are 3 to 4 years old. They prefer average moisture in soils and can tolerate some shade.
