Showy Mountain Ash is the hardiest and slowest growing of the mountain ashes. It produces clusters of lacy white flowers in the spring, and clusters of bright red berries in the fall. The leaves also turn stunning red and orange colours in the fall. The berries are slightly larger and a brighter red than the European Mountain Ash. The berries are an excellent source of food for migrating birds, and they are also edible for humans. They are also known as Rowanberries and can be made into chutneys, jellies, wines, flavoured liquors or fruity vinegars. They are bitter, so mix with other fruit such as apples to help sweeten them if making preserves. Letting them freeze for a few weeks before use will also help. Showy Mountain Ash is moderately resistant to fireblight.
