Delta Hackberry is a native tree found in Delta Manitoba. It is related to, and grows similar to Elm trees and tolerates urban pollution and salt well. They thrive in many soil types and moisture conditions. The bark is corky and rough, and the green leaves are elm-shaped. The tree produces sweet, edible purple berries  that are loaded with carbohydrates, protein and fat and have been eaten for more than 500,000 years. While they are a fruit, they have a large pit so are eaten more like a nut. They can be harvested most easily after the leaves have fallen. The wood is also very strong and the tree can live for up to 150 years.

Note: Bare root (BR) stock is only available until May 11. Viability is not guaranteed for bare root stock that is not picked up promptly.
