A tall, majestic, long-lived tree (200-300 years) that produces moss-ringed acorns, 20-30mm in diameter (which should not be eaten raw). One of the most resistant oak species. Can tolerate clay and alkaline soil and drought once established (must be adequately watered for the first 2 years until its taproot and spreading root system is established). Does not tolerate salt so do not plant near a major road. May survive a fire due to its thick bark. From the white oak family so wood can be used for furniture. Medicinally used for heart ailments.
Harvest: late August to early September
Pollinators: Another Bur Oak recommended as trees will produce male and female flowers, but rarely at the same times. *Wind pollinated.
